| Very messy! |
On your marks...
Oil pastels or Wax oil crayon
Thick art paper or card
A coloured water wash (I use edible food colouring powder mixed in water)
Brush to apply the coloured water
Get set...
Paper towels for wiping hands after using oil pastels.
Newspaper to place under work when using oil pastels.Prepare the paint area with a table cover.
Have a clean up bucket ready for washing hands and cleaning equipment.
Go...
With the paper in landscape orientation fold the paper in half. Write your child's name on the line using an oil pastel.
Unfold the paper and you will see a shadow of the name below the line.
Trace over the shadow with your oil pastel.
Decorate the paper. We have outlined the name to make it pop from the page.
Note: We used normal crayons to make some drawings over the page but you'll notice once the colour wash is applied normal crayon doesn't stand out.
Once you've decorated the page with oil pastels, apply a colour wash over the entire page and leave to dry.
You'll notice my 3 year olds interpretation of painting over the whole page!
Here's another that has been completely covered with the colour wash.

I didn't know you were homeschooing Amie :) Us too :) I was just thinking about resist paintings today - well not really, it was on playschool hehe - but they are so fun aren't they? Jack really likes to write his name so I think he'd enjoy this, also we've been doing a lot of colour work so this will be a nice extension.
ReplyDeleteI love your Project 52 posts where you share your week of homeschool. Jack is surrounded by an amazing learning environment :)
DeleteThey really pop from the page! They'd love them :)
ReplyDeletewow the end result was really cool. nice & bright!
ReplyDeleteYour crayon resist is so lovely and bright - such a fun way to start learning words! We have enjoyed crayon resist (or any kind of resist) when we do it, seems just a little like magic :-)
ReplyDeleteI love the vibrancy in these crayon-resist pieces of art.
ReplyDeleteI still haven't done any resist paintings with the girl. I too love the vibrant colours that jump off the paper. So pretty!
ReplyDeleteWonderful colours Amie...i bet they look lovely on the wall!
ReplyDeleteThis looks like so much fun. I can see myself giving this a go while my little one is still growing to be big enough.
