There's a wonderful up and coming small business in my 'little' town of Esperance with the gorgeous name of Chooki. Each market Sunday they set up their little stall of handmade treasures and I have to admit, they are the main reason I get down to the markets. I love seeing the beautiful fabrics that they use to make the gorgeous items and I can't wait until Strawberry's walking so I can buy her one of those lovely summer dresses.
So who are the girls of Chooki? Well I recently got to know a little bit about them and I would love to share our chat with you all.
I love your business name. How did you come up with it? Chooki is the nick-name for our first little chicken that was born, it took us a while to decide a name but we kept going back to that so ended up sticking with it! It really suits our products.
How did Chooki come to life? Chooki came about when we were all living in different parts of Australia and were bored. With 2 of us having a love for sewing (Bec and Brea), a master knitter, and a crafty sister it all just started to form it's self. Our Mumma Hen (Viv) and the Crafty sister (Clare) lived in Esperance and started going to the local markets with a small amount of sewing and knitting and then it just exploded. We were getting orders and requests and then Chooki was born! We still have one Chook that lives away but we are working on that, haha!
So you are a family business, doing much of the work at home. You must be very busy! How do you manage the balance between work and raising a family? Balancing a family and Chooki can get quite tough but because we have the 4 of us all contributing it makes it a lot easier because there is always someone there who can help out. We stopped doing custom orders because the demand was making things a little tough at home for all of us and that has made a big difference. All together we have 5 kids and only 2 of them are school age so it can get pretty hectic at home, especially if we are trying to get ready for a big market. We have lots of late nights, but we love what we do so it's all worth it!
What product are you most excited about right now? Well coming into Winter our beanies are always a huge hit and the Mumma Chooki has some great new designs she has been working on. We have also designed a new Winter range that we are very excited to release because it is the first time we will be offering it at the markets, it will include winter dresses, pants and pram blankets.
What vision do you have for the future of Chooki? The vision we have at the moment for Chooki is to just become a strong local name that people can trust. We pride ourselves on good quality products at a fraction of the price you will pay in most other handmade boutique shops.

Your designs are lovely. What inspires them? Our children are the inspiration for all our new designs and ideas. We tend to make them things, either something they need or want and they are our little team of testers, if they love it then we put a small amount into the markets and trial it there.
